Share-House Lounge Setup: Comfy Seating That Survives Your Housemates

Kitting out a share-house lounge room? Here's the seating that fits through the front door, survives six housemates and a mystery stain, and moves out when you do.

Share-House Lounge Setup: Comfy Seating That Survives Your Housemates

Ah, the share-house lounge. Six people, four different sleep schedules, one couch that has absolutely no idea whose turn it is. I've been sat on by strangers at 2am. I've held a whole housemate through a breakup. I've had two-minute noodles dropped on me and nobody apologised. You'd be grumpi too.

If you're setting up a share-house lounge room, here's how to do it without buying something that dies in six months or won't leave with you when the lease does.

Rule one: it has to fit through the front door

Share houses are old, weird, and full of hallways designed by someone who hated couches. The classic mistake is falling for a big lounge in a showroom and discovering it can't turn the corner into your living room.

Every Grumpi piece ships vacuum-compressed in a box — no removalists, no wedging a three-seater through a doorway on its side while your housemate films it. It comes in flat, you unbox it, and it puffs up to full size over a day or two. The doorway never even finds out.

Rule two: everyone needs a seat (including the uninvited)

There are five of you on paper and somehow nine of you on movie night. You need flexible seating, not one couch that starts a turf war.

A Loungi Modular Sofa is the peacekeeper here — add a Loungi Occasional Chair or shuffle the modules around when the household grows (or shrinks, dramatically, mid-lease). Throw in a Plumpi beanless beanbag for the floor-sitters and a Tootsi ottoman that doubles as a footrest, a spare seat, and a coffee-table-when-someone-forgets-a-coaster.

Rule three: it has to survive the household

Share-house furniture lives a hard life. Shoes stay on. Snacks happen. Someone's dog visits and treats me like a scratching post.

Grumpi seating is built for it — every fabric has passed AS/NZS 4088.1 fire testing, and durability was tested by SGS to 20,000 seat cycles at 950N, so it holds its shape long after the third housemate rotation. It won't sag into a sad hammock by winter. It's tougher than it looks. Like the rest of you by the end of the lease.

Rule four: it has to move out when you do

Leases end. Housemates ghost. You will move again, probably up some stairs, probably in a hatchback.

Because a Grumpi lounge is modular and light, you can pull it apart and take it with you instead of leaving it on the nature strip with a "still comfy" sign. Try that with a traditional couch. Actually, don't.

The share-house starter kit

If you want the short version: start with a Loungi Modular Sofa as the anchor, add a Plumpi and a Tootsi for overflow, and a Peachi swivel chair if you want one seat that's secretly yours. Everything comes with metro delivery in 10 business days, or a $100 store credit if we're late.

Set up a lounge your housemates will fight over. And then, one glorious day, pack it up and take it with you. Finally. Some alone time. Shop the range.
