Grumpi suits you if you'd pick a piece because it looks great and then sink into it because it's comfy. Grumpi seating is high-density polyurethane foam through and through, with one exception: Peachi sits on an MDF swivel base. Give it 24–48 hours to expand after unboxing. Peachi’s base goes on with the allen key in the box.

You need a sofa bed, or a long trial
If guests sleep on your couch, you want a sofa bed, and we don't make one yet. Koala and Ecosa both do, and both offer long in-home trials (120 days and 100 nights) with 5-year warranties. Ecosa also has a few stores where you can try them first.
A high-street compressed option
If the budget is the whole brief, Kmart's compressed range is hard to beat on price. Worth knowing: Kmart’s linked Trove sofa listing says to allow up to 72 hours to regain its shape.

King Living has showrooms and made-to-order designs with longer lead times. Its compressed KING Kube / FreeForm range starts at $999 for a 2-seater and offers a 120-day trial, subject to eligibility and return fees. Foam has 10-year coverage. - Our warranty is 1 year. Koala and Ecosa offer 5. Your Australian Consumer Law rights apply regardless and don't expire when a warranty does. For durability, look at the testing above.

- It can't be re-compressed. Once it's out of the bag, it stays full size. Check other brands’ packaging and return conditions before opening.
What to ask any lounge-in-a-box brand
- What's the foam density? Density is one part of support and durability. Ask for measured specifications and relevant test results.
- What was it tested to, and by whom? Look for fire testing to AS/NZS 4088.1 and a real durability figure.
- What exactly is the delivery promise? A timeframe with something behind it beats “ships soon”.
- What does the warranty cover, and how do you claim?
- Can you return it once it's opened? Most compressed furniture can't be returned for change of mind once it's out of the bag. Check before you cut the wrap.
- How long until full size? Anywhere from 24 to 72 hours depending on the brand.
