Will It Fit? Getting a Sofa Through Tight Doorways, Lifts and Stairs
Narrow hallway? Third-floor walk-up? A lift the size of a phone box? Here's how to get a full-size lounge into an awkward space without measuring your doorframe in tears.
Every couch has a nemesis, and it's usually a doorway. Or a lift built in 1972. Or a staircase that turns a corner it clearly regrets. I've watched people measure a hallway four times, hold their breath, and still end up stuck on a landing at a diagonal. There's a better way, and it doesn't involve removing a window.
The old way: measure everything, then pray
Traditional furniture arrives fully built, which means the delivery is a physics exam. Will the three-seater clear the front door? Turn into the hall? Make the bend on the stairs? Get one measurement wrong and it's going back on the truck — or living in the garden.
It's the single most stressful part of buying a lounge, and it has nothing to do with the lounge itself. It's the box it never came in.
Why a box changes the maths
Every Grumpi piece ships vacuum-compressed in a box. Full-size comfort, squished flat and rolled down to a fraction of its final size. That box fits through doorways, into lifts, up walk-ups and around staircases that would make a normal sofa cry.
You carry in a box. You unbox it in the room you actually want it in. Then it puffs up to full size over 24 to 48 hours. The awkward doorway never even meets the finished couch.
Still, measure the one thing that matters
Boxes are easy, but do a quick sanity check anyway. Measure your narrowest doorway and your tightest turn, and make sure a flat, rolled box — not a full sofa — can get through. Spoiler: it almost always can. If you're unsure about a specific piece, check the box dimensions on the product page before you order.
Lifts, walk-ups and hairpin staircases
This is where furniture-in-a-box quietly wins. A Loungi Modular Sofa arrives as manageable boxes you can carry one at a time — no four-person relay, no scratched paint, no "lift it higher, no, YOUR higher." Top-floor flat with no lift? A Plumpi beanless beanbag or a Peachi swivel chair comes up the stairs in one trip. The Plumpi just needs a fluff. The Peachi has a base plate that screws on with an allen key, about two minutes.
What comes out of the box
Once it's in the room, it's real furniture — not a compromise. Every fabric has passed AS/NZS 4088.1 fire testing, and durability was tested by SGS to 20,000 seat cycles at 950N, so it holds its shape for the long haul. It just happened to arrive the easy way.
And when you inevitably move again, it packs down and comes with you. No removalists, no doorway drama, no leaving me behind.
The short version
If a normal couch won't fit, a Grumpi one probably will — because it doesn't show up as a couch. It shows up as a box. Everything comes with metro delivery in 10 business days, or a $100 store credit if we're late. Have a look at the range and pick the one that suits your very inconvenient hallway.
