Modular Lounge Buying Guide: Build the Right Setup for Your Space

Modular lounges are the sensible answer to an unsensible question: how do you buy a couch when you don't know where you'll be living next year? You buy it in pieces.

What is a modular lounge?

A modular lounge (called a sectional in the US) is a sofa made of independent modules — armless seats, left-arm and right-arm ends, and corner pieces — that connect in whatever layout your room wants. Two-seater today, L-shaped monster after the next move.

Decoding the pieces

Armless module: the building block. One on its own is a proper accent chair — our Loungi Occasional Chair anchors a corner solo. Line up two or three and you've got a sofa.

Left and right arm modules: the bookends. "Left" means the arm is on your left as you sit in it. One of each caps a run: Loungi Left and Loungi Right.

Corner module: the turn. A corner piece joins two runs into an L-shape without a gap.

Layouts that work

Apartment two-seater: Left + Right Modules, with a 220 × 90 cm footprint. Each module comes in its own box. Check the packed measurements against your way in.

Family three-seater: Left + Armless + Right Modules, 300 × 90 cm. That's the three-piece Loungi Modular Sofa.

The L: the five-piece Loungi Modular Sofa is Left + two Armless + Corner + Right Modules, in a 280 × 280 cm layout. Go six pieces and you get a Tootsi ottoman too. The separate two-piece Corner Sofa is two Corner Modules, 180 × 90 cm.

What to measure

Measure the room, then leave space for walkways, doors and the rest of your furniture. Then measure the way in. Compare each carton with your narrowest doorway, hallway, stairs and lift, including room to turn. Left and Right cartons are 33 × 33 × 110 cm. Armless cartons are 31 × 29 × 90 cm. Corner cartons are 31 × 31 × 114 cm (L × W × H). Carry the boxes into their final room before you open them.

What to look for in Australia

Check the test scope, the care instructions and the delivery terms. SGS tested our adult seating to 20,000 seat cycles and 15,000 back cycles at 950N.
