Unboxing Day: What to Do When Your Lounge Arrives in a Box

The box is at your door. Here's the unboxing-day routine for a lounge in a box: where to open it, how long to wait, and the one thing you can't undo.

Unboxing Day: What to Do When Your Lounge Arrives in a Box

The box is on your doorstep. It's a bit alarming and suspiciously small for something called a lounge. I get it. I'd be nervous too, and I'm the one inside.

Here's what to do next. It's short. Most of it is waiting.

Step one: carry the box to where I'm going to live

Don't open me in the hallway and then wrestle a puffed-up lounge through a doorway. That's the whole point of the box. Carry it into the actual room, put it down roughly where you want me, and open it there.

Step two: open the carton, then the wrapping

Cut the carton open, slide me out and cut the vacuum wrapping. Go gently around the fabric. I'm soft, not bulletproof.

Then I exhale. Loudly, sometimes. Don't panic. That's air going back into foam, not a sign something's wrong.

Step three: wait. Properly.

This is the bit everyone rushes. A lounge in a box takes 24 to 48 hours to get back to full size. Sit on me at hour two and you'll think I'm flat. I'm not. I'm busy.

Give me a pat and a squish now and then if you like. Otherwise leave me alone. Go and make a cuppa.

Step four: the bit that depends on who you bought

  • Loungi: modules connect with a zip. No tools. Line them up, zip, done.
  • Plumpi, Tootsi, Teddi and Beari: no tools.
  • Peachi: the one exception. The base plate screws on with an allen key and takes about two minutes. It's a swivel chair, it has to be attached to something.

One thing you can't undo

Once I'm out of the vacuum bag, I'm not going back in. That's just how compressed furniture works. So pick your spot before you cut, and have a think about where I'll live.

Why you can sit on me when I'm done

Durability was tested by SGS to 20,000 seat cycles at 950N, and every fabric has passed AS/NZS 4088.1 fire testing. So once I've puffed up, I'm ready to be flopped on. Daily. By everyone. Including the dog.

And the box itself?

Flatten the carton and pop it in the recycling. Or keep it for ten minutes for the cat. Either way, it has done its job.
