Dog and Kid-Proof Furniture: What Actually Survives a Busy House

A busy house needs furniture that's happy being sat on every day, and a care routine you'll actually keep up. No fabric is indestructible. Claws, chewing, spills and rough play will leave a mark on anything, including us. Here's what to check before you choose.

"Kid and dog-proof" isn't a marketing sticker

No fabric on earth is truly indestructible, so ignore anyone who promises it. What you actually want is resilience: dense foam that springs back after the hundredth belly-flop, tight-woven or textured fabric, and construction that's been properly tested rather than just described in a nice font.

Our fabrics are fire tested to AS/NZS 4088.1 using cigarette-smouldering methods. SGS tested our adult seating to 20,000 seat cycles and 15,000 back cycles at 950N. Teddi and Beari get their own kids seating test: 10,000 seat cycles at 750N, plus impact checks and the soft-seating safety checks that apply to them. That's what the tests measured, on the samples tested. It says nothing about claws, chewing or a toddler with a juice box. Read the test scope and results.

Choose fabrics that hide a multitude of sins

Texture is your friend. Bouclé and corduroy break up the surface, so crumbs, paw prints and the occasional texta escapade don't announce themselves to the whole room. The Loungi range in bouclé and the Plumpi beanless beanbag in corduroy are quietly forgiving like that.

Faux fur, like the Peachi swivel chair, is plush and huggable — just know it shows pet hair more than a flat weave does. A quick once-over with a lint brush and it's back to looking smug. Worth it for the flop factor.

Durability you can actually sit on

Our foam is made for sitting on, under normal home use. Jumping and rough play are a different job from the repeated seat-loading tests. Sorry, kids. Follow the care instructions and check the box and the furniture when it arrives. Good packaging helps, but it can't promise nothing happens in transit.

Spills happen. Make clean-up boring.

The secret to surviving spills is speed, not panic. Blot — don't rub — as soon as it lands, work from the outside in, and let it dry properly before you declare victory. Warm, mid-tone colours are more forgiving of everyday life than a bright white ever will be, so if your household runs on juice and muddy paws, lean into the browns and oats.
